Wondering what our church is like?

Here are a few answers to questions we get asked all the time.

What happens during a worship service?

Our Worship Services are intended to reach up to Christ and to reach out to one another in our community. During the Worship Service, there will be time for reflection, sharing joys and concerns, singing and praising, and a Bible-based meditation or sermon. Please feel free to participate as much as you are comfortable!

What should I wear?

At GCOB, we focus on connecting with Christ and one another, not on what someone is wearing. Some may be in business casual attire, such as khakis and sports coats. Others may be in jeans and a polo shirt. Some may wear dresses, while others wear shorts and T-shirts. We want everyone to dress comfortably and come as they are.

What is the music like? Do I need to sing during service?

Our music is a blend of styles, from traditional hymns on the organ to more contemporary music on the piano. We usually have contemporary music on the third Sunday of the month.

While singing is a way that GCOB worships God, we realize not everyone feels comfortable singing in public. Instead of singing, you can meditate on the words or take in the sounds of the music – whatever deepens your connection with Christ and the community!

Do you expect me to donate or financially give?

No, we do not expect you to financially give unless you feel led to do so. We have structured the way we give so that you will not be thought of or treated differently than another person.

God has called all believers to properly steward their time and resources. However, what or how much someone gives is between them and God.

What about my children?

During Worship Service, we offer a range of options.

We have a children’s room during the Worship Service for children through elementary school age. At least two background-checked adults will staff the children’s room.

Some parents like their children to participate in our Worship Service, and the GCOB community loves their participation. Some children participate in the Worship Service until the sermon, joining their parents in singing and prayers. Others spend the entire Worship Service with their parents. No matter your choice, we have special backpacks full of fun activities for children so families can comfortably worship together.

And please do not mind the noise and cries – the GCOB is a loving community that enjoys helping and greatly loves the “worship” of our youngest.

I’d like to learn more, who do I talk to?

We’d love to talk about your experience and answer any questions that you may have. After Worship Service, a member of the pastoral team typically greets individuals at the central double doors of the sanctuary. Feel free to talk or ask questions. Additionally, please get in touch with the church at (717)334-5066 or info@gettysburgcob.org if you’d like to talk sometime during the week.
